How to publish a blog post on WordPress + free blog post template!

In my previous blog post, I showed you the basics of launching your very own blog. Even though I will get more in depth about several aspects of blogging, in this post, I will show you how easy it is to publish a blog post on WordPress.

This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase, I will receive a small commission, at no extra cost to you. For more information, please read the disclaimer.

Step 1: Go to your dashboard

It will look like this:

Step 2: Click on Post, then Add New

Step 3: Write your blog post! Yay!

There are different kinds of blocks in this page. The first one at the top will obviously be the title.

Then you have the simple paragraph block:

The image block:

The heading block:

Where you can choose different sizes. You should use them in the logical order, or your post will look weird. Also, using just the right number of headings will please your SEO! I’ll address SEO later.

There are many more different types of blocks, like lists and videos, so take a look and use the blocks you need.

Step 4: Choose the category

I’ll use the same example as my last blog post: if you write an article about a recipe for dinner, it’s not logical to categorize it under Geek corner (unless you are writing recipes from video games. If it’s the case, please send me your recipes).

Creating a category is pretty simple

In the menu on the right side of your screen, under Categories, click on Add a new category, enter the name, choose the parent category (if applicable), then click on the button Add a new category. Voilà!

Step 5: Tags

Tags are keywords to help search engines find you. They are as important as SEO. Again, your keywords must be relevant to your article. Bonus: you can use them as hashtags on your social media posts.

Step 6: Featured image

This image will appear when you share the blog post link on social medias.

For example, let’s take my Facebook post about my last blog. The image that was automatically chose by Facebook was my featured image.

The image you choose should be visually appealing

Do not take pictures from Google without asking for permission first. The best way of getting beautiful images and not get into trouble is to subscribe to a paid stock photo service. I mentioned it in my last blog post, I use Pixistock (and I LOOOOVE their photos) and Canva. Both services are very easy to use, and you can mostly always find what you have in mind.

You should also provide alt text for the image. To be honest, I’m not 100% sure why, but I think it has to do with accessibility requirements.

Step 7: Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Since I very recently started my own blog, the SEO universe is still new to me. I strongly suggest you read this article on A Self Guru: https://aselfguru.com/seo-basics-beginners-guide-to-seo-understanding-mastering-seo/

I personally use the plugin Yoast SEO, but there are a lot of good plugins. If you choose to go with Yoast, installing the plugin is super easy:

  • In the menu on the left side of your screen, click on Plugin, then Add New.
  • In the search bar on the right side of the screen, search for Yoast SEO, then click on Install.
  • Once installed, click on Activate. As simple as that!

Step 8: Publish that article already!

Once you are ready to publish your blog post, you simply go to the right side of your screen, in the section Status & Visibility. Choose the post visibility (if you want anyone to read it, leave this as Public), select the date and time you want to publish your post, then click on Publish in the top right corner.

There you go, your blog post is now live on your blog! Now you should share it on your blog’s social media accounts and be proud of yourself!
